Caravanproject mediahit on Balkan area

While the whole world is watching the World Cup, two Dutch artists play a completely different sport; they try to reach Istanbul hitchhiking with a caravan – without a car.

At the end of this month two Dutch artists Tjerk Ridder, Peter Bijl try to reach Istanbul, European Capital of Culture 2010 with a caravan but without a car! Istanbul is the final destination of the Caravan Project: a creative hitchhiking endeavour aiming to connect the three European Capitals of Culture of 2010.

You need others to keep you going
With the parole, one needs others to keep you going, the Caravan project departed from Utrecht (aiming to be Capital of Culture in 2018) in January. After hitchhiking to the Capitals of Culture Ruhr2010 and Pécs in Hungary they are now crossing the Balkan area with final destination Istanbul.
The journey produced numerous creative encounters and stories and moreover it appeared to be a media hit! In more that 5 countries the Caravan Hitchhiking Project is mentioned in the national press (amongst the National News). The Balkan trip gets a lot of media attention; both Serbia and Croatia reported on the trip.

Theatre play in Shangai
Lots of Europeans ‘hooked on’ to the project, literally by pulling the caravan and artists along or metaphorically by giving their support. Moreover Tjerk Ridder and Peter Bijl use the stories and experiences Unterwegs as source of inspiration for a Theatre play. The preview of this play took place on the World expo in Shanghai. Fragments of the show, as well as the latest updates for instance the song Unterwegs, are downloadable from the webportal: caravanproject.eu. The website also reveals numerous stories and visual impression on the trip as well as the travel scheme.
